Major Drop in PISA Test Scores for Reading and Math

AbroadEd could establish that the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) recorded a major drop in test scores for reading and math. PISA is an international comparative study administered every three years to 15-year-old students in reading, math, and science.

The 2022 edition of the PISA recorded an unprecedented drop in performance compared to the 2018 edition of the PISA.

AbroadEd could confirm that the PISA 2022 study was supposed to happen in 2021, but it was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nearly 700,000 students took part in the 2022 study.

The results were released on December 5th, along with an extensive study on how the pandemic disruptions have affected student performance around the world.

The 2022 edition examined 81 education systems in 37 member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which has been administering the test since 2000.

Performance of some countries in the PISA 2022 Edition

AbroadEd highlights the performance of certain countries in the study. Moreover, the decreasing test scores were noticed in both rich and poor countries.

“The world is no longer divided between rich and well-educated countries and poor and badly educated countries,” says Andreas Schleicher, the director for education and skills at OECD.

Albania saw the biggest decrease in math scores, with a massive 69-point decrease. Countries such as Germany, Iceland and The Netherlands also had a decrease in math scores by more than 20 points.

According to the OECD, 20 points are considered to be equal to one year of learning. That means Albanian students lost more than three years of learning, possibly due to the pandemic.
